The Home Maintenance Calendar Nobody Gives You

Most homes don't fall apart from one big failure — they wear down from a dozen small maintenance tasks that never got put on a calendar. Nobody schedules 'change the AC filter' the way they schedule a birthday, so it slips until something actually breaks or smells off.

The households that stay consistently clean and pest-free usually aren't doing more work than everyone else — they're just doing the same tasks on a fixed rhythm instead of reacting to visible mess or a sudden bug sighting. Prevention is cheaper than the panic-clean that follows a problem you can no longer ignore.

A useful way to think about it is in three bands: weekly (surface cleaning, laundry turnover, wiping high-touch points), monthly (AC filters, curtain washing, deep bathroom cleaning), and seasonal (fumigation ahead of the rains, wardrobe deep-cleans between harmattan and wet season, mattress and upholstery treatment).

Seasonal tasks are the ones people skip most, simply because there's no obvious trigger. Nothing visibly forces you to fumigate in March versus June — until the rains arrive and pest activity spikes all at once, well after the ideal treatment window has closed.

The same logic applies to garments. Traditional wear that only comes out for events tends to get ironed in a rush the morning of, rather than pressed and stored properly in the weeks before, which is exactly the kind of last-minute pressure that causes scorched lace or a crushed agbada yoke.

None of this requires a complicated system — a simple recurring reminder for each band, tied to the actual seasons rather than the calendar month, does most of the work. The goal isn't a spotless house every day; it's never being surprised by dust, damage, or a pest problem that had weeks of warning.
